To maintain normal ploidy in the succeeding generation, all sexually reproducing organisms reduce the genome content in their gametes by half prior to the fusion of male and female germ cells. For this, gametes are produced via a special type of cell division called meiosis, which consists of two successive divisions (meiosis I and II) without intermediate duplication of the genomic DNA. Students repeatedly learn about the basic events of mitosis and meiosis, first in junior high school then again in high school, yet the meiotic cell cycle is one of the most often misunderstood biological process among college students. It appears that the major reason for such confusion can be narrowed to a few simple points. First, the students have difficulties understanding the concept of $quot;homologous pairs$quot; vs. $quot;sister chromatids$quot;. Second, students find it very confusing to follow the changes in ploidy number and keeping it attuned to the changes in DNA content during meiosis. Third, the mitotic and meiotic progression is not always diagrammed in text books in a way that would help student`s understanding of this subject. In this report suggestions are made for high school biology classes to minimize students` confusion and misconception about meiosis.
