the Spring and Autumn Period, with continuing wars and political chaos, people’s lives were very unstable. In order to re-establish a stable social order, some Confucian scholars put forward their own political vision. This vision incorporated the idea of heaven, which was posited originally in the Yin (Shang) Dynasty. At that time, Heaven (tian)was thought of as a personal God, and was conceived of as an omnipotent ruler. Confucian scholars believed that all rulers should follow the model of heaven, and become leadersnot only in politics, but also in ethical and moral life. In this way, they emphasized ethics mainly from a political perspective; their purpose was oriented to social stability.
Early Christians posited an ethics stemming directly from the word of God. Indeed, Christianity came from the nation of Israel, a people governed by the Ten Commandments. The fundamental spirit of Christian ethics is love; to love God and love people in daily life. When this moral idea became associated with the politics of the nation of Israel, it gave birth to an ethical idea that focuses on maintaining people’s holy faith and holy life. This was further related to economic stabilization.
Confusion and Christianity, though there are differences between the original ideas of Ren and love, share some view son the universality and value of love. Although holding distinct attitudes towards the death of parents, both proclaimed that people should do their utmost to respect and serve living parents. In Confucianism, ethics comes from politics, and rulers practice ethics for the sake of politics. Christianity combines ethics and politics together in the worship of God. For the Christians, it is important to harden people’s belief, which influences people’s moral health and results in felicitous political relationships. This is why, in the New Testament, people are obligated to obey the government, even in colonial contexts. Both Confucian and Christian ethics have important political ramifications.
Early Christians and Confucians both asserted the existence of Heaven or God, and both encourage us to avoid evil to love people and act righteously. All of these are valuable for building a harmonious society.
