This study analyzed the multifaceted impacts of autonomous vehicle (AV) adoption on pedestrians' experiences and urban design, while validating the existing environmental psychology framework of perception-cognition-evaluation. Using an integrated approach that combined virtual reality (VR), EEG (electro- encephalogram), computer vision, and surveys, the research systematically examined sensory data from pedestrians and spatial design elements. A total of 43 virtual scenarios were designed to experimentally evaluate AV density, natural elements, the presence of crosswalks, personal mobility devices, and delivery robots. Cross-classified multilevel modeling was employed to quantify the relationships between variables.
The findings revealed that pedestrians' visual experiences and psychological responses interacted with AV technologies and urban environmental factors across distinct stages. First, in the perception stage, the level of AV development and the presence of crosswalks significantly influenced pedestrians' recognition of natural elements. Higher levels of AV development were associated with reduced attention to natural features, suggesting that the way pedestrians perceive natural elements changes as AV technology advances.
Next, in the cognition stage, EEG data showed that focusing on sidewalks and nearby objects increased arousal, inducing heightened alertness, whereas natural environments and crosswalks elevated valence, promoting emotional stability and positive responses. This highlights the need for urban design to account for the interaction between pedestrians' psychological stability and visual elements.
Finally, in the evaluation and judgment stage, EEG data and survey results demonstrated a positive association between visual attention to sidewalks and aesthetic satisfaction. This finding challenges the assumption that increased arousal always reduces aesthetic evaluation, showing that pedestrians' psychological responses are influenced by specific contexts and environmental factors rather than operating uniformly.
Synthesizing the three models, the study found that pedestrians' visual experiences and psychological responses dynamically interact with AV technologies and urban design, shaping their evaluations based on the type of perception. While AV development generally elicited positive responses from pedestrians, changes to traditional safety infrastructure tended to provoke negative evaluations.
This study provides practical guidance for designing pedestrian-centered, sustainable, and human-focused urban environments in the context of AV adoption. By integrating EEG, visual data, and survey responses collected in virtual environments, the research validated subjective evaluation methods through an objective and quantitative approach. Future research should incorporate real-world data and include diverse demographic groups to enhance the generalizability and applicability of the findings.
