치문현토와 번역의 연관성 연구 = A Study on the Correlation Between ChiMun Hyeonto(Classical Chinese Phrases) and Translation

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper establishes a desirable translation mechanism for Buddhist scriptures contemplating the action of Toe(in this paper Kukyol and Toe are used interchangeably as the meaning of the former is similar to the latter) on the translation of Buddhist scriptures. The correlation between Hyeonto and translation will be analyzed focusing on ‘Category and Segment’ and ‘Format and Metaphor’ in investigating my translation of Chimungyeonghun, amongst other Buddhist scriptures(of which learners are monks at the initial stage of training). ChapterⅠpresents post position and conjugation ending words that appear in translated versions published of Chimungyeonghun and Gangyeongdogam. The implication of Hyeonto on the governing scope of the verb, complement structure, and concord of the main predicate is studied in ChapterⅡ that discovers that not only the meaning and the role of verbs are ambiguous as many of the scriptures accommodate the precedent Hyeonto as it is; in addition, the lengthened sentences lower legibility. ChapterⅢ investigates the impact of Hyeonto on an antithesis, the style of metaphor and this reveals that the style of original ones are distorted and it is uneconomical that post-modification were adequately translated into Chinese. Hyeonto helps in the understanding of Chinese characters as well as exposes an obstacle for translation of itself. I may be better to translate the Buddhist scriptures after marking which well expresses post-modification and antithesis analyzing Baekmoon(白文; unpunctuated Chinese composition) after deleting Hyeonto although; however, the value of Hyeonto(a precedent achievement) cannot be neglected.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은, 어순구조가 다른 한문에 ‘다는 토’[懸吐]가 불전 번역에 어떻게 작용하고 있는지를 고찰하여 바람직한 불전 번역의 방법을 찾아보는 데 목적이 있다.
불전(佛典) 가운데 불교의 신참 승려들이 학습하는 치문경훈의 제 번역을 대상으로 삼아 ‘범주와 분절’, ‘형식과 비유’를 중심으로 현토와 번역의 연관성을 살펴보고자 한다. Ⅰ장은 저본인 치문경훈과 간경도감 간행본에 나타나는 현토(懸吐) 조사나 활용어미를 제시하였다. Ⅱ장은 현토가 동사의 지배 범주, 주술어의 호응, 통사구조에 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는지를 살폈는데, 여러 본이 선행의 현토를 그대로 수용하여 의미와 동사의 지배범위[閾]이 모호할 뿐만 아니라 문장이 길어져 가독성이 떨어진다고 할 수 있다. Ⅲ장은 대구(對句)와 비유의 문체 등이 현토로 인해 어떤 영향을 받고 있는지를 살폈는데, 원문의 문체 미도 찾기 어렵고, 후치수식을 중문으로 번역하여 비경제적이라고 할 수 있었다.
현토는 한문을 쉽게 이해하게 하는 장점을 안고 있지만 그것을 사용함으로 인한 번역의 장애 요인이 적지 않았다. 선대의 업적인 현토를 참고하고 활용하는 것은 필요하겠지만 현토가 있는 원문을 참고할 때는 현토를 삭제한 후 (백문) 문장을 분석하여 대구와 후치(後置) 수식(修飾)이 잘 드러나는 표점(標點)을 한 후 번역하는 것이 바람직할 것이다.
