We are living in the era of global ecological crisis and it demands an alternative society from us. In this paper, the author presents a small, frugal, and self-supporting community as the ecologically sustainable alternative society. The agriculture in this society would and should be set up on organic farming. In this respect, organic farming appears as a movement or a strategy for such a society.
There seem to be two kinds of motivation behind organic farming. One originates from human self-interest such as healthy and safe food, marketable high quality crops, and survival of human being as a species. The other spring from a sense that we are a part of the nature or ecosystem as a whole, and we are put under the obligation to preserve it. The first is called anthropocentrism, and the second ecocentrism. The first has formed the main current in the theory and practice in Korean organic farming. But it seems that the second should take the ruling position from this point of agricultural history.
How we farm the land depends on our idea of the relationship between the land and us. According to Aldo Leopold's holistic and ecocentric land ethic, the land is a biotic community, and we are a plain member and citizen of it. In this paper the author urges to accept Leopold's land ethic as the prime ethical guideline for organic farming.
