The objective of this research is to observe the Fordist aspect of cinema by comparing the technology and production of films with those of a modern factory. Before proceeding to the discussion, the following question is raised: Why has cinema seldom dealt with factories, despite a certain homogeneity, as both emerged from modernity? To answer this question, we should investigate some resemblances between cinema and the factory. First, the shape of a film strip and the mechanism of film production are similar to those of a factory with conveyor belts, as both deal with time as if it is a finite resource or has monetary value. Second, the dominant film production companies strategically adopted Fordism in the era of classical Hollywood cinema. Consequently, the films of the time were treated as cultural commodities rather than art. In this respect, the features of the studio system and ‘movie palaces,’ each corresponding to a manufacturing system and retail stores, are analyzed.
Films were produced by following a designated order founded on modern infrastructure, which is similar to the production of a commodity on a conveyor belt. Moreover, they were distributed in a state of mystification by removing all traces of the process. Considered in this framework, the secret is revealed that cinema can paradoxically sustain its existence by virtue of workers—another identity of the spectators watching films after working hours, who go to the movies to escape labor. Eventually, this leads to one answer to the question raised above: Cinema is a factory or a workplace that the spectators (workers) do not want to recall.
