This study proceeded group literature therapy on a group of maladjustive adolescences and observed its effects on them. Group literature therapy was proceeded to raise the level of self efficacy and flexibility in managing stress in order to enhance the adapting ability of students in adolescences. Its effects were then studied. The third grade students of a middle school in Busan has been set as the object of study. 16 students were reported by their homeroom teacher as having maladaptive tendency, as well as frequently smoking, disappearing from home, leaving school before being dismissed or not coming at all. They were divided into two groups to conduct the study.
For this study, ‘A scale of student’s adaptation to school’, developed to measure the extent of the middle school student’s adaptation to school by Yong-Lae Kim was used, as well as ‘A scale of general self efficacy’that has been revised by A-Young Kim. Finally, ‘A scale of method of managing’, developed by Lasarouse and revised by Young-Hee Lee, was used to measure the method of stress management.
The program consisted of 8 sessions altogether, once a week for 2 hours. 16 students were divided into an experimental group and a control one, and examination before and after the point of study was carried out. Also an additional examination was conducted for both groups after the sessions have finished,to consider the differences in changes made to the control group and the experimental group.
The summary of the study is as follows:
Hypothesis 1 stated ‘group literature therapy will raise the school adapting ability of maladjustive adolescences’. It had a meaningful result and was regarded as valid. Hypothesis 2 stated ‘group literature therapy will raise the self efficacy of maladjustive adolescences’, which did not have a meaningful result and was disregarded. Finally hypothesis 3 stated that ‘group literature therapy will better enable the maladjustive adolescences to manage stress,’ which was also regarded valid as it had a meaningful result.
Therefore, group literature therapy had a meaningful effect on the school adapting ability as well as methods of managing stress. The study of group literature therapy wouldn’t have been possible without a deep understanding of, a connection to, the maladaptive adolescences. There were many instances where they sought to let their existences known through deviating from the group, being aggressive and raging as they did not acknowledge their problems and was familiar with their self-overstated side. However, if an effective program in heightening their self efficacy and anger management become developed while they are having positive changes in the process of adapting to school, we would be able to expect a much more satisfying result.
