      The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of gender-based chapter book reading on text-reader interactions and learner responses. A trend in English language learning has recently been focused on the areas of learner development and language learning as "socialization." Yet, English classrooms in Korea, high schools in particular, are still performing teacher-centered and exam-oriented lessons. Using English literary works as an EFL reading material has been highly recognized by many scholars as one of the most efficient ways to help learners grow cognitively, affectively, culturally, and not least linguistically. Also, a growing attention to extensive reading programs has been recognized in Korea since it is known to help learners to be heuristic and enthusiastic readers. To bring these two ideas into high school English classroom, this paper presents and discusses such important concepts as reader-response theory and its implications on English reading instruction, extensive reading, benefits of using chapter books as extensive reading materials, and gender differences in English language learning. This study examines how an extensive reading program based on chapter books would work in an actual high school class environment. Our subjects are 11th-grade students who have read chapte rbooks of various genres based on their own gender preferences. They have written response journals after their readings. We trace and analyze any improvement in their reading ability, their responses as a reader, and their attitude towards English language learning. This study suggests an alternative but effective way of teaching and learning English in an authentic and creative context, which goes beyond skill-oriented instructions and learning English merely as a subject in a Korean EFL environment.
