영국과 미국 종교학과의 현황과 전망 = Departments of Religious Studies in UK and USA: Current Situation and Prospect

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 영국과 미국의 대학교에 개설되어 있는 종교학과의 현황을 분석함으로써 종교연구의 가까운 미래를 전망하였다. 먼저, 국교를 인정하는 영국에서는 두 가지 흐름의 종교연구가 있다. 잉글랜드의 옥스브리지를 비롯한 대학교들과 스코틀랜드의 고대대학교에서는 신학연구를 시작으로 세계종교연구가 추가되는 방식으로 종교학 연구가 자리를 잡았다. 반면에 1960년대에 신설된 신규대학교는 신학에서 독립하여 사회과학적, 문화비평적, 학제 간연구의 종교학을 발전시켰다. 둘째, 정교분리와 종교자유를 헌법으로 보장하고 있는 미국에서는 개신교문화의 지배 아래 설립된 사립대학교와 주립대학교의 종교연구 경향이 큰 차이를 보인다. 시카고대와 하버드대는 신학부와 종교학과가 통합구조를 이루며 발전했고 예일대는 병행구조를 보여준다. 1960년대에 종교학의 활기를 주도한 주립대학교의 종교학과는 다양한 종교와 방법론의 추구를 기초로 꾸준히 성장해 왔다. 결론적으로 영미 대학교의 종교학은 시대적.정치적.경제적 변화에 민감하게 반응하며 진화해왔다. 뉴욕의 9·11테러와 런던의 7·7테러 이후 이슬람을 비롯한 종교 간 대화와 이해 및 화해에 대한 사회적 관심이 대두되면서 종교에 대한 전통별 개별연구가 더욱 활발해졌으며 현상학적 연구를 사회과학적 연구가 보완하였다. 세계화와 국제화 및 다문화화가 가속화되고 세속화와 신학의 영향력이 위축됨에 따라서 영미의 종교학과는 21세기에도 지속적으로 성장할 것으로 전망된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is to deal with the current situation and prospect of Religious Studies (RS) in UK and USA. First, in the UK where state religions are established, ancient universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, St. Andrews, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Edinburgh have expanded from theological emphasis to world religions. The new universities including Lancaster and Stirling began first independent departments of RS without theological orientation. They developed new styles of RS with social sciences, cultural criticism, and interdisciplinary approach. Second, in the USA where the separation between politics and religion and the religious freedom are protected by her constitution, there are huge gaps between private and state universities. Chicago and Harvard developed the study of religions with their Divinity school, but Yale emphasized the parallels between theology and RS. In the 1960s, the RS departments have spread in the state universities. In conclusion, the departments of RS will increase if their faculty and students meet what modern society wants in the globalization, internationalization, and multiculturalization.
