The purpose of this study is twofold: (ⅰ) to analyze the computer language from the Korean linguistic perspective and (ⅱ) to suggest we should use Korean properly. The term 'computer language ' in this study is referred to as 'the written, not spoken, language used in the computer-assisted telecommunications such as Internet and cell phone messages.'
The computer language data randomly collected from October, 1999 to March. 2001 was analyzed and arranged under the headings of Phonemes & Orthography, Jargons & Variants, and Well- & Ⅲ-formed Sentences. Various negative effects of the computer language upon Korean were identified.
It can be expected of that this study will help the Korean people not only recognize the negative effects of the computer language upon Korean, but also cooperate to use the computer language properly. Many scholars and educators will express a lot of concerns about the contamination of the Korean language caused by the Internet. It is also expected that they will mark every effort to forestall the anomaly of their mother tongue in advance. This study, as the threshold of language purification, will help the Korean youth use their native langrage efficiently and decently when they are involved in computer-assisted telecommunications such as internet chatting, e-mailing, and message-sending.
Consequently, it was proposed that the misuse of the computer language be corrected from the Korean linguistic perspective. However, further study is still needed because the computer language changes so rapidly. We should remember that the purication of the computer language is part of the "Beatification of the Korean language" Movement. The negative effects of the computer language will be diminished if we do our best to use Korean properly at home, at school, and in the society.
