국제어로서의 문화 리터러시 함양을 위한 영어교과서 문화내용에 관하여 = A Study to Develop Cultural Literacy as an International Language for Middle School English Textbooks

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 중학교 영어 교과서를 대상으로 국제어로서의 문화 리터러시를 함양시키기 위해 바람직한 읽기내용을 살펴보는데 있다. 이를 위한 방법으로 먼저 교수요목기부터 현 7차 교육과정기까지의 중학교 영어교과서의 문화 내용을 종적으로 분석하였다. 분석 방법은 물질, 행동, 정신문화를 중심으로 한 문화 유형별 분석과 영어권, 한국어권, 문화 비교, 보편 그리고 기타 문화를 중심으로 한 문화 배경별 분석이었다. 다음으로 다양한 문화권 출신의 외국인들에게 추천하고 싶은 자국 문화에 대한 의견을 조사하여 우리나라 영어교과서의 문화 내용과 비교해보았다. 분석 결과는 문화 유형별 분포가 고르지 않고, EFL상황에서의 효과적인 영어 학습으로 강조되고 있는 문화간 비교의 비중이 제일 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 또 외국인들의 의견을 통해 영어권 문화와의 차이나 사고방식의 차이 등에 관한 깊은 성찰이 부족하다는 점과 우리와 이웃한 아시아권 문화에 대한 소개가 전무하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 국제어로서의 문화리터러시를 함양하기 위한 제언으로 문화 유형을 고르게 다루고, 문화간 비교․대조의 양을 늘리고, 목표권 문화를 영어권뿐만 아니라 아시아권을 포함한 비영어권 문화로까지 확대하는 것을 들 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims at investigating what cultural contents might be appropriate for developing cultural literacy as an international language for Korean middle school English textbooks. The study analyzed middle school English textbooks from Gosuyoomokgi to 7th National Curriculum on the basis of culture types and culture backgrounds. Then a survey was conducted for foreign professors from various countries to collect recommendation for their own cultures. The results of the textbooks analysis show distribution of culture types was not just equal, and as to culture backgrounds, comparison between cultures which is most emphasized in EFL situations was the least. And culture contents on English textbooks are generally trivia, and lower than students cognitive level. The study suggests firstly, each culture type should be dealt with equally, and comparison between cultures should be increased. Secondly, target culture should be expanded into non-native English culture as well as native English culture. Thirdly, culture contents should not be a just trivia but help students to build up cultural schemata. Lastly, the role of English teachers in EFL situations is emphasized to help students understand culture as difference and form a sphere of interculturality.
