This study was for recognizing the influence of analytic, creative and practical intelligence that was based on the successful intelligence theory, upon academic performance. The purpose of this study was to search the relationship between successful intelligence and school adjustment, successful intelligence and academic performance, school adjustment and academic performance.
To achieve this purpose, following hypothesis was set up.
1. Children with high successful intelligence may indicate elevated school adjustment.
2. Children with high successful intelligence may indicate elevated academic performance.
3. With respect to academic performance, the predictive power of successful intelligence and school adjustment may show differently.
To inspect above-mentioned assumptions, objects were selected total 385 from B elementary school in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do; 3 classes on 4th grade(105), 4 classes on 5th grade(140) and 4 classes on 6th grade(140). The successful intelligence test was measured with questionnaire; researcher translated Sternberg's Triarchic Research into Korean and adapted it for elementary school student's level. Children's school adjustment was measured with self-rating measure for children made by Joe Young-mi. And academic performance was measured with the scores of final test managed by B elementary school on December, 2005. To measure the academic performance, we used the scores of Korean, math, society and science and each full mark was 100 points. Among 385 objects, we analysed only 368 children's data except some had omitted score or answered untruthfully at questionnaires.
On this study, through the successful intelligence test, I classified into analytic, creative, practical and successful intelligence then inspected the relationship between successful intelligence and three low-ranking factors of school adjustment with Pearson's regression analysis. And, through the successful intelligence test, I classified into analytic, creative, practical and successful intelligence then inspected the relationship between successful intelligence and the scores of four lessons on academic performance with t-test. Through school adjustment test, I classified into the relationship between friends, teacher and whole school adjustment then inspected the relationship between school adjustment and the scores of four lessons on academic performance with t-test. Finally, I calculated the multiple correlations depended on school adjustment as a dependent variable and then operated regression analysis to compare the relative influence between school adjustment and successful intelligence.
The results of this study were as follows.
First, successful intelligence of elementary school students was one of the factors influence on school adjustment, especially, the group having higher practical intelligence indicates higher school adjustment.
Second, academic performance according to successful intelligence of elementary school students had meaningful difference.
Third, successful intelligence and school adjustment had influenced meaningfully on academic performance of elementary school students and school adjustment had more effect than successful intelligence.
Based on above-mentioned results, follows were proposed for succeeding study.
First, objects were limited locally to a specific city and the final-analyzed objects were 368 students, so we had a limitation to generalize the result. Accordingly, on succeeding study, more samples and consideration on the phases of grade would be needed.
Second, it was connected with use of test tool of this study. On this study, students were not given enough time they needed because of the situation of the school, and all students were given same time for a test. Therefore, enough time, as long as they want, should be given on succeeding study.
Third, I put special stress on the relationship with academic performance on this study. However, It was proposed for succeeding study that we should widen the scope to success on creation and real life, and that the study about more availability of successful intelligence was needed.
