本作品は1927年雑誌󰡔改造󰡕に発表された芥川龍之介の短編で、彼の死の一か月前の1927年6月10日に書き上げたものである。物語は三人の死が表れており、末尾で戦闘艦××がドックに入れられて｢運命を待ちつづけていた｣と締めくくられている。登場人物はA、S、K、Yというイニシャルの四人の海軍中尉と四人の兵士たちである。そのうち三人の兵士が死ぬが、皆呆気ない死であり、釈然としない、死ななくても良い死である。K中尉は楽手の呆気ない死から｢死は人をして静かならしむ｣とという人生無常を感じずにはいられない虚無感を覚えたのである。溺れ死にした水兵の死からは戦争の悲惨さと、助けを求める兵士を戦闘の邪魔になるので、見捨ててしまう残忍さを覚える。また、一人の下士官が甲板士官に罰を受けた後、煙突の中で首を吊って自殺をする。彼は煙突の中で肉体が焼け落ち、骸骨になってしまったのである。Ｋ中尉はこの下士の悲惨な死から、｢一等戦闘艦××｣の中で死んだ三人の死は彼の心に｢いつまでも暗い影を投げていた｣と云う。ところが、彼は軍内部では評判も良かったので歳月が経ち、彼はいつしか海軍少将の階級まで進級していたと云う。が、彼は人には言えなかったが、進級の為には軍人として名誉、恥辱、権威を失うことさえ見過ごしたのである。つまり、彼は歪んだ軍人精神で進級したのである。其れ故揮毫を頼まれても滅多に応じなかったが、やむをえず揮毫をする場合には彼の心に残っている暗い影と悲しさを揮毫したのである。作者芥川龍之介は｢一等戦闘艦××｣を舞台にK中尉と三人の兵士の死を通して軍国主義の一断面を示して、歪んだ軍国主義を批判しているのである。

This is a short story by Akutagawa Ryunosuke, published in the 1927 magazine “Kaizo”, written on June 10, 1927, a month before his death. The story shows the deaths of three soldiers, and at the end of the story, “Fighter xx” was docked and concluded, “I’ve been waiting for my destiny.” The characters are four Navy lieutenants with initials A, S, K and Y. and four soldiers. However, he had a good reputation within the army, and it was said that he had been promoted to the rank of major general of the navy over time.
