교양에서 시민으로-뒤르케임 교육론의 함의

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 뒤르케임의 교육 관련 저술을 검토하여 그의 2차교육론의 핵심이 교양 함양이 아닌 시민 교육에 있다는 것을 밝히는데 목적을 두고 있다. 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 뒤르케임의 교육사회학 관련 3대 저술인 『교육과 사회학』, 『도덕교육론』, 『프랑스에서의 교육 발달』을 중점적으로 검토하였다. 이 과정에서 1차적으로 뒤르케임의 교육 연구의 방법적 특징과 그의 교육사 연구의 내용을 검토하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 뒤르케임은 교육을 당대 사회 관계와 구조 속에서 분석하였을 뿐만 아니라 교육 제도 연구에 역사사회학적 방법을 도입하여 제도 변화에 미친 사회적 이상의 영향을 강조하였다. 둘째, 뒤르케임이 실제로 제시한 교육 방법과 내용을 검토하여 그가 실제로 강조한 내용이 제3공화정 시기 프랑스 사회에서 어떤 의미가 있는지를 추론했다. 셋째, 『도덕교육론』과『프랑스에서의 교육 발달』에 제시된 뒤르케임의 교육개혁 논의를 통해 관습화된 교양 교육을 넘어서는 시민교육 지향 프로그램의 구체적 내용을 검토했다. 특히, 뒤르케임이 새로운 2차교육 프로그램으로 강조했던 세 영역인 과학, 문학, 역사 교과관련 제안을 검토하여, 전통적인 2차 교육에서 간과되었던 과학교육에 대한 강조를 통해, 현대 사회에서 자연과학의 분석 방법을 익히는 것이 복잡한 사회 문제에 대한 분석력을 키운다는 점에서 시민교육의 주요 대상이 된다는 것을 밝혀냈다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In recent years the problem of `Crisis of Humanities` has caused a controversy in Korean academic community. In this article I tried to make clear that Durkheim`s focus on secondary education is not in restoration of conventional liberal arts but in building new civil education program. Achieving this purpose, I noted Durkheim`s sociological articles, especially his three masterpieces on educational sociology: Education and Society, Moral Education, The Evolution of Educational Thought. Through reading these, I found out three outlines for studying Durkheim`s contribution on civil education. First, He gave emphasis on considerable influence of social ideal, especially it`s ability to change educational system. For elucidating it, He applied sociological method to analyzing French educational history. Second, Durkheim`s educational suggestions were designed to vitalize new morality for reorganizing the 3rd Republic. Third, by analyzing Moral Education and The Evolution of Educational Thought, Durkheim`s focus on secondary education was building civility through teaching new programs: e.g., history, literature, and especially science. Traditional moral education which had taught only `parrot-like morality` was not available on modern society. For Durkheim, building students` ability for critical thinking was a cardinal aspect in new moral education.
