The purpose of this study is to practically analyze the relationship between dual-earner couples role-conflict and psychological distress on the supposition that the one evokes the other, to make an analysis of the effects of dual-earner couples self-esteem, sex-role identity and coping method on the relationship, and to grasp the different aspects between the couple caused by the relationship.
Two hundred and sixty-five couples, who teach at elementary, middle and high schools located in Kwangju City and Chollanam-do, took part in the study, and SPSS was employed to analyze the data.
The specific research problems of this study and their results are as follows:
[Problem 1] What is the effect of dual-earner couples multi-role conflict upon psychological distress?
First, within family-role conflicts, economic conflict, children-caring conflict, and communication conflict between husband and wife all exerted strong effects regardless of the types of psychological distress, and sexual conflicts also had meaningful influences upon depression and somatization. Within job-role conflicts, only role-overload conflict affected the psychological distress such as depression, anxiety, and somatization. Thus most of the role-conflicts have notable influences on psychological distress. Second, family-role conflicts turned out to affect psychological distress more significantly than job-role conflicts do.
[Problem 2] Are the effects of dual-earner couples multi-role conflicts on psychological distress different according to gender?
This study shows almost no gender difference in the effects of dual-earner couples multi-role conflicts on psychological distress. Regardless of gender, role-conflicts exerted recognizable effects upon psychological distress, and among job-role conflicts only the role-overload conflict turned out to have a greater influence on psychological distress. The couples experienced more psychological distress from family-roles than from job-roles.
[Problem 3] What is the effect of coping method on the relationship between dual-earner couples multi-role conflicts and their psychological distress?
In both family-role conflicts and job-role conflicts, coping methods showed moderating effect upon the relationship with somatization alone. In other words, this study shows that, in experiencing the conflicts in family-roles or job-roles, those who coped actively with the conflicts went through less somatization than those who coped passively with them.
[Problem 4] What is the effect of self-esteem upon the relationship between dual-earner couples multi-role conflicts and psychological distress?
Self-esteem showed moderating effect only upon the relationship between family-role conflicts and somatization symptoms. In other words, this study shows that the dual-earner couples with high self-esteem experienced fewer somatization symptoms from family-role conflicts than those with low self-esteem did.
[Problem 5] What is the effect of sex-role identity on the relationship between dual-earner couples multi-role conflicts and psychological distress?
In sex-role identity masculinity showed no moderating effect on the relationship between role-conflicts and psychological distress while femininity showed buffering effect only upon females, which says that in the case of women femininity tends to lessen the effect of job-role conflicts upon anxiety and depression. That is to say, the women with high femininity expressed more anxiety and depression than those with low femininity.
[Problem 6] Are the effects of moderator on the relationship dual-earner couples multi-role conflicts and psychological distress different according to gender?
The moderating effects of the types of role-conflicts turned out to be different according to gender. In other words, in the case of males the moderating effects within family-role conflicts were relatively greater while in the case of females those within job-role conflicts were relatively greater. In the case of males, self-esteem and coping methods showed moderating effects on the relationship with family-role conflicts and somatization symptoms. In the case of females, feelings of self-esteem lessened somatization within family-role conflicts, and coping methods and femininity showed buffering effects within job-role conflicts. The types of psychological distress showing moderating effects were as follows: in the case of males moderating effects were verified only in the somatization symptoms while in the case of females moderating effects were expressed by depression, somatization, and anxiety.
According to the results of this study, dual-earner couples are strongly influenced upon psychological distress due to the conflicts caused by performing both family-roles and job-roles at the same time, and there is almost no difference between men and women in the effect of role-conflicts upon psychological distress. That is to say, unlike the previous arguments that multi-role conflicts bring about psychological distress only to females, many males do suffer from multi-role conflicts, so it is necessary to intervene in the matter. The methods of intervention should be based on the interaction of multi-role conflicts and moderators. It is seemingly desirable to provide dual-earner couples with programs for heightening their self-esteem, or to counsel them to cope with their problems actively, when they express their somatization symptoms resulting from family-role conflicts. Also it will be an effective way for lessening their somatization symptoms to help them heighten their pride, when they express the symptoms resulting from job-role conflicts.
There were differences between husbands and wives in the moderating effects. The wives with distinctive femininity experienced less depression and anxiety by lessening their job-role conflicts. It suggests that in Korea, where traditional sex-roles based on a patriarchal system affect job-roles in general, emotional, expressive, empathetic, mild, tender, and cooperative women with high femininity will go through fewer conflicts and make easier adaptations to their lives.
In conclusion this study has provided several basic materials which are required to find the clues for contributing towards dual-earner couples mental health, to shorten the time for counseling to help the couples solve their problems, and to promote the effectiveness and efficiency of counseling.
