This study examines the defense system along the Duman River in Hamgyong Province during the late Chosŏn Dynasty from a structural perspective. Previous research has noted that the Owi (Five Military Commands) system was implemented in the Bukgwan region, resulting in a unique military structure distinct from other areas. However, the specific realities of this system have not been deeply explored. The Owi system in late Chosŏn Bukgwan differed from its early Chosŏn predecessor, originating from the geographical specificity of the Duman River borderlands. Various complex elements were integrated into this military structure, where beacon fire stations (Bongsu), watch posts (Pasu), express messengers (Pabal), and post stations (Yeokcham) all operated within a single unified system. Although managed in a highly intricate manner, it maintained its own internal systematic order. The Owi functioned between the district (Gun-hyeon) and the fort (Jin-bo), while underneath this layer, an organic arrangement of beacons, messengers, and watch posts—independent of the formal military census— formed a spatially dense defense structure. Ultimately, this military system can be characterized as a reflection of the regional specificity of Bukgwan, particularly the unique spatial environment of the Duman River border.
