지적장애인 부부의 결혼생활에 관한 질적 사례연구 = A Qualitative Case Study on Married-Life Experiences of Married Couples with Intellectual Disabilities

This study aimed to understand married-life experiences of married couples with intellectual disabilities who were deinstitutionalized and have lived in a community until the present. Using a qualitative case study method, data was collected and analyzed; participants were selected from the recommendations of a social worker, working at a public agency, and interviewed using individual interviewing methods. In detail, there many diverse groups were interviewed, including married couples with intellectual disabilities and social workers. According to the results, the main themes were extracted from the married-life experiences of married couples with intellectual disabilities who live in a community. These main themes were: love leads to marriage; an ardent desire for living together with their children in their own nest; ordinary and trivial life; life as a person who has to pick up a livelihood; and desires toward complete independent living. These couples with intellectual disabilities have an ordinary married-life just like couples who are not mentally challenged. However, the case study participants expressed difficulties in child-rearing, financial management and independent living. The implications of this study`s results will hopefully impact policy making and actual practices as they were discussed focusing on the rights and well-being of the married couples with intellectual disabilities.
