In Confucianism, Li(禮) appears as the canon of order for a harmonious society. A filial piety and brotherly love(孝悌) is a core-principle of the ordered Li-community. This principle in family works as a canon of all relations between peoples in society and nation. There are three conditions at the base of this principle; firstly regarding co-relationship as a condition of human being, secondly making self-reflection a basic virtue, thirdly pursuing a human model of self-regulating. This paper show a new idea that the ordered Li-community made by spontaneous participation of the common people, contrary to general thought about confucianism, is similar with the democratic community.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

유학에서 예는 조화로운 사회를 위한 질서의 기준으로서 등장한다. 그 질서를 중심으로 구성된 예치공동체의 핵심원리는 ‘효제’이다. 가족 안에서 지켜지는 효제의 예가 마을과 국가에서 만나게 되는 모든 인간관계의 기준 질서로 작용한다. 이러한 질서의 기저에는 첫째로 관계론적 인간관을 인간존재의 기본조건으로 보고, 둘째로 자기반성을 기본 덕목으로 삼고, 셋째로 그로부터 파생되는 자율적 인간상을 이상으로 삼는 사상이 놓여 있다. 본 논문은 기존의 유학에 대한 편견과 달리, 자발적 참여에 의해 이루어진 예치공동체가 우리가 바라는 민주적 공동체의 모습과 매우 닮아있다는 점을 보여주고자 한다.
