In this paper, we examine the implications for psychoanalytical psychological counseling by comparing Kohut and Kernberg, two of North America's leading psychoanalysts, focusing on narcissism and borderline personality. The two studies have interesting similarities and differences, and provide important clinical understanding and application for clients with narcissistic or borderline orientation. In the first part of the paper, Kohut and Kernberg's main theories of narcissism and borderline etiology, symptoms, intervention prodedure, and main concepts are presented. In the second part, we will consider and suggest implications and interventions for psychoanalytic psychological counseling.
