윤종신의 발라드 작곡 기법에 관한 고찰－2017년 <월간 윤종신> 앨범을 중심으로 = Review of Ballad Composition Technique Focusing on <Monthly Yoon Jong-shin> in 2017

Ballad music developed from Korean popular music to music with unique and sentimental characteristics, starting from the late 1980s. The characteristics include a musically slow tempo, lyrical melody, prominent arrangement mainly using piano and string instruments, and lyrics focusing on the theme of love between a man and a woman. Fundamentally, the melody created for singing is the center of the music, and continuous research has been conducted on the harmonics material that harmonizes with the lyrics. This study is a review of a popular music composition technique that reveals what intrinsic common laws exist by setting “Monthly Yoon Jongshin,” which produces quality ballad music every month, as there search subject. Yoon Jong-shin, the producer of Monthly Yoon Jong-shin, selected common composition as the method of collaborative composition and utilized an oral composition method mainly focusing on melody. After categorizing released ballad songs that have been commonly composed in the Monthly Yoon Jong-shin album per year since 2010, the highest number of ballad songs was released in 2017. Among the songs that were released in Monthly Yoon Jong-shin, three songs, “Passport,” “Near the End,” and “Finding You,” were used as research subjects to scrutinize structural function, melody movement, and harmonics background. The analysis results showed that there were significant characteristics, mainly in function and melody. Functionally, the “A-A'-B-B'” symmetrical function is repeated to express the melody without Pre-Chorus or Bridge. In the melody, tensions were created through a great leap in intervals, a rise in pitches, and sequential descending repeated the solutions. Furthermore, the oral composition method helped to draw the composer’s original musical characteristics and images, and the variability of the harmonics material was secured through a wholly divided arrangement task. The exploration of ballads in popular music is intended to secure and build diversity in musical styles, which will contribute to the improvement and development of the quality of pop music creation.
