르네상스철학자 폼포나치의 절충주의 = Renaissance Philosopher Pomponazzi's Eclecticism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

문】폼포나치는 르네상스시대를 대표하는 아리스토텔레스주의 철학자로 알려져 있다. 그렇다고 해서 그에게 ‘철학함’은 아리스토텔레스 저작만을 주해하거나 그의 사유를 그대로 좇아가는 것이 아니었다. 이 글은 영혼의 불멸성에 관하여에 등장하는 폼포나치의 이론을 살펴봄으로써 그가 아리스토텔레스에 천착하고 있을지라도 여러 가지 사상에서 옳다고 생각되는 것을 취사선택하여 자신의 이론을 구성하려는 절충주의적 경향을 가지고 있음을 드러내고자 한다. 그 경향은 크게 세 가지로 구분될 수 있다. 첫째, 신체기관에 의존해야 하는 물질적 감각작용을 수행하는 사멸하는 본성과 비물질적 사고작용을 수행하는 불멸하는 본성이 어떻게 인간영혼 안에 양립할 수 있는지를 놓고 폼포나치는 아리스토텔레스가 남긴 문제를 신플라톤주의에 의존하여 푼다. 둘째, 폼포나치는 덕과 악덕이 사후에만 적절하게 보상받을 수 있기 위해 불멸성이 도덕적으로 요청된다는 반론에 대해 스토아주의 윤리학에 의존하여 답변을 한다. 그는 그러한 보상의 도덕적 가치를 부정한다. 덕의 본질적 보상은 덕 그 자체고, 악덕의 본질적 형벌은 악덕 그 자체다. 셋째, 종교의 실천적 가치를 강조하는 점은 아베로에스의 주장과 흡사하다. 이것은 진리의 탐구가 신학자가 아니라 철학자의 몫이라는 폼포나치의 면모를 여실히 드러내는 것이라 볼 수 있다.

Renaissance Philosopher Pomponazzi's Eclecticism

Pomponazzi has been recognized as one of the most important Aristotelian philosophers in the Renaissance. He makes great efforts to get back to the real meaning of Aristotle without regard for religious teaching. In spite of his resolve to adhere to the text and to explicate it in its own terms, he draws material from non-Aristotelian sources simply since he thinks that the insights found among the texts from other traditions can usefully be applied to strengthening his own philosophy. This paper is intended to show his eclecticism.
In the De immortalitate animae, Pomponazzi places man at the center of the universe much in the same way as Ficino and Pico had done a generation earlier, while in another context he argues that virtue is its own reward, a favorite Stoic theme known to him through Seneca and many other sources. Furthermore, Pomponazzi is indebted to Averroes for the idea that the value of religion lies not finding truth but rather in controlling community life. Immortality for Pomponazzi is a fairy tale, or rather a fiction; the purpose of this fiction is to maintain order in society.
