The purpose of this study is to find a long-term conflict resolution through constructivism. The study focuses on the steps that were taken in resolving the 30 year, long term conflict between Israel and Egypt. The study also points out 9 major factors that took place between 1977-1979.The gist of these major points are as follows: (1) changes of both Israel and Egypt's national identities and interests, (2) decrease of both Israel and Egypt' negative perceptions of the other, (3) reduction of both Israel and Egypt's institutionalized commitments, (4) both Israel and Egypt's strengthened efforts to avoid biased decision-making, (5) both Israel and Egypt's resolute willingness to terminate the Israel/Egypt long term conflict, (6) favorable changes of the international structure surrounding Israel and Egypt, (7) mutual constitution between both nations' willingness to terminate the long term conflict and the changes of international structure, (8) mutual constitution between both Israel and Egypt's national identities/national interests and the international structure between Israel and Egypt, and (9) changing nature of the anarchy between Israel and Egypt.
Sadat of Egypt decided to visit Jerusalem in November 1977. His visit was a product in the changes of Sadat's belief on Egyptian national identity and national interest. Sadat's change in beliefs originated from his observation of the long term conflict between Israel and Egypt. His visit to Jerusalem created a change in Israeli national identity and interest. The changed national identities and national interests of Israel and Egypt brought the change of international structure between the two nations. The changed international structure, in turn, accelerated the changes of Israel and Egypt's national identities and interests. That is, the changes of units (i.e., Israel and Egypt) and those of international structure between Israel and Egypt constituted mutually. Such a mutual constitution brought about the changes of anarchy between Israel and Egypt, that is, the change from 'enemy' to 'friend'. In sum, the termination of a long term conflict starts from the changes of decision-makers' ideas on the relationship with the enemy. Such changes in ideas originate from decision-makers’ serious retrospection on the long term conflict itself. And these new ideas can then be used as a tool to remedy the long term conflict between nations.
