This study attempts to investigate organization and management of Japanese federations of commodity-based agricultural cooperatives. Examinations show commodity-based agricultural cooperatives have been stared with commercial activities mainly in livestock and vegetable farms, undergone a crisis in competition of the economic business with multipurpose agricultural cooperatives, and fixed through various types of unification and collaboration. However drastic decline of the number of farms and small scale of the business limit commodity-based agricultural cooperatives in growing. The great-sphere unification is considered as a prospective solution. In addition, its federations need to seek and develop new role and business to survive. This investigations provides good examples for korean commodity-based agricultural cooperatives in searching promising directions.
