There had been berren period in Buddhist literature since the beginning of Cho-sun dynasty. There was no collection of works. But many collections came up, starting the middle of Cho-sun dynasty. And there were two persons, Cheongheohyujeong and Buhyuseonsu who were the support of a religious tradition.
There is not much of study about Buhyu, even though he left a lot of poems. This paper aims to look over his poems. There are 337 pieces of poetry in 《Buhyudangdaesajip》. Among them, most seems to be written for giving to a trainee or responding to the monks and the layperson, not for expressing personal sentiment.
Famous and leading monks such as Cheongheohyujeong, Samyeongyujeong, Jewolgyeongheon participated in historical fields to tided over a difficult situation. But Buhyu went the other line. He succeeded the tradition of disciplinants and tried to attain the high state of So¨n(禪). He didn't make distinguished achievement like Cheongheohyujeong and Samyeongyjeong in history, but he had a good influence over the people in silence. His poems show his character. He is the one who expressed the nature of reality without special rhetoric.
