Google Arts & Culture (GAC), through its Korea’s Demilitarized Zone project, reconfigured the restricted space of the DMZ. This study examines 12 online exhibitions featured on the project's landing page (253 slides, 33,012 characters) through a researcher-conducted close reading and keyword-based content analysis, and analyzes how the collaboration among the National Archives of Korea, the War Memorial of Korea, the KAIST Anthropocene Research Center, and the Real DMZ Project shapes the DMZ into a multiple and open digital space through the lens of Doreen Massey’s theory of relational space. The findings show that the exhibitions constitute the space relationally through a selective emphasis that keeps certain vocabularies-those directly expressing social wounds or political conflict-out of the foreground, while producing multilayered spatial experiences by juxtaposing the different temporalities and narratives of history, nature, and art. Furthermore, by transforming the language of division and confrontation into that of future and possibility, the exhibitions recontextualize the DMZ as an open space. This study thus argues that online platforms should be understood not as mere collections of content, but as relational spaces constituted through the negotiation of different subjects and narratives.
