Arguing for the SVO Hypothesis in Korean : Evidence from LNR and RNR

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper shows that LNR and RNR constructions in Korean cannot be derived by any of the previous analyses based on the traditional SOV hypothesis with a head-final structure. Instead, it attempts to derive these constructions under the SVO hypothesis with a head-initial structure. As a result, Korean is better viewed as having the SVO order underlyingly and ending up displaying SOV characteristic in larger part. Consequently, the results of the paper can help maintain the universal Spec-head-complement, namely, underlying SVO order, initiated by Kayne (1994) and eliminate the head-parameter, thereby reducing computational complexity, which the recent minimalism desires to achieve.
