장년 선교사의 증가를 어떻게 볼 것인가? = An Assessment on the Growth of Finishers among the Korean Missionaries

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study looks at the growth of finishers among the Korean missionaries. It is an emerging phenomenon that has not been fully paid attention. There are very limited number of studies that discussed this growing trend in the Korea church. Those who freshly engage in cross-cultural ministry in their fifties and above can be found in various statistics. I, first of all, propose a new Korean term for those new missionaries whose age is more than fifty, replacing words such as “silver” and “senior”. I, then, provide a working definition of finishers for this study. Secondly, I reviewe literature on this subject. There are two books and four short research papers. While they are instrumental in providing general information on the issue, they are not based on empirical researches, except one study. I, then, discusse two country cases where the number of Korean finishers has risen sharply in recent years. I articulate a number of issues related to the growth of Korean finishers in the cross-cultural ministry. Are they additional mission resources or replacing mission resources? What are the issues that need to be revisited? How do other Korean missionaries perceive this phenomenon? I suggest four missiological implications. First of all, finishers are a newly emerging phenomenon. Secondly, there is a need for further theological and missiological studies on this subject. Thirdly, the Korean mission community needs to come to a level that is comprehensive, systematic and intentional. Lastly, finishers and other missionaries need to find a practical step that foster mutual understanding and cooperation.
