This study investigates how generative artificial intelligence is being incorporated into qualitative research workflows and how human–AI collaboration is documented within methodological reporting. A literature-based case study approach was adopted, analyzing 14 international studies in which AI played an active role in coding, summarizing, or identifying patterns in qualitative data. The analysis identified six distinct collaboration types: (1) parallel coding, where human and AI independently analyze the same data; (2) triangulation, using AI to validate human interpretations; (3) prompt-controlled collaboration governed by researcher-designed analytic instructions; (4) iterative and cyclical interaction that refines interpretations across repeated human–AI feedback loops; (5) complementary role division between AI’s technical capabilities and human interpretive judgment; and (6) hybrid integration in which human and AI outputs are synthesized into a new interpretive product. Across all cases, AI expanded analytic efficiency and helped surface patterns that might be overlooked by human researchers. However, human researchers consistently retained epistemic authority as the final arbiters of interpretation, ensuring contextual depth and ethical judgment. These findings underscore that AI does not replace but rather reconfigures the interpretive labor of qualitative inquiry. By articulating six collaboration structures, this study offers a foundational framework for establishing future reporting standards for AI-supported qualitative research.
