With the realization of high, medium and low resolution satellite image supplies, interests are being placed on utilizing satellite images for initiative production and updates. Updating digital maps with high resolution satellite images would be efficient; however, with the use of medium resolution satellite images with the spatial resolution of 2.5m, such process would be much more economical.
A digital map with the scale of 1 to 25,000 has been updated with thorough analysis and examination on the above thesis. Geometric correction was performed with SPOT 5's singular image and the existing digital map. Also, the 3 dimension contour-lines were extracted from the existing digital map and the digital altitude model was extracted from the altitude products to renerate an ortho-image. By overlapping the ortho- rectified satellite image and the existing digital map, the altered features were revised using screen digitizing methods. Also, to analyze the positioning accuracy, the unaltered features were overlapped into satellite images for comparison. As a result, the surface-positioning-error was computed by RMSE 5.98243m. Therefore, it is accessed that would be applicable to 1:18,000 scale digital maps.
By appling medium-resolution satellite images to revisions and compilations, a determinate quantity of geographic information was acquired. Furthermore, its potential application for visual analysis of road, hydrography, building, forest and topographic features was verified. With the advent of advanced satellite image processing technologies and highly efficient equipments, it is anticipated that the initiative production of digital maps will be feasible.
