In this paper I trace the development of the hungarian writing system and the establishment of the hungarian orthographic rules in the modern language reform age from cultural historical perspective. The history of hungarian orthography began with introduction of Christianity and Roman Alphabets in the early hungarian society, where it might have used the entaglio(engraving) writing until settling down in the Carpathian basin. The Middle Age is the most important period in the history of hungarian orthography. The age of the Reformation, the invention of printing and Renaissance have created a new cultural environment, in which the hungarian written language has begun to be formed. In this period various rival orthographic proposals have been made. The protestant orthography as a creature of the Reformation competed with the Catholic's. This confrontation has formed the basis of the modern hungarian orthography of the language reform age. The Catholic orthography has represented the 'jottista' party of the West Hungary, while the Protestant orthography has represented the 'ipszilonista' party of the East Hungary. The controversies between these two parties were going on with political and religious purpose, but the meaning of these controversies was that it contributed to form the simple and unique orthographic rules of hungarian language, which have showed the phonetical and morphological characters of modern hungarian language. In 1832, the first hungarian orthography was constituted by the Hungarian Academy, which has initiated continually reforming orthographic rules in posterity.
