This article traces the transformation of Yoon Dongju's poems through the signifier or image of 'hometown'. Yoon Dongju is a poet who has used this experience as a material of poetry writing while studying abroad in Bukgando, Pyeongyang, Gyeongseong, and Japan during his short life of twenty-seven. Unlike the characteristics mentioned in diaspora literature, 'hometown' was not given to Yoon as a single experience, and he worried about the 'outside' of collectively universal consciousness of Bukgando immigrants and colonial Koreans and left traces of it all over the poetry. This study focuses on the fact that he is not passively experiencing the symbolic world of 'home' through his hometown Yongjeong, Joseon, and Japan, but in a unique way. At the same time, this paper examined the image of 'sky' as a Christian worldview and its imaginary representation as a reference frame that enables it.
First, in the poems based on Yongjeong and Pyeongyang, the poet shows the wandering of the subject who is struggling in the discrepancy of territory and nationality through two hometowns and sky. At this time, the desire for 'rising' is connected to the cosmic world of 'another hometown' through the Christian faith in Yonhui College(Chosen Christian College). And Yoon dongju try to practice continuous reflection as an ontological method to reach the world. Finally, during his study abroad in the Empire, Yoon Dongju wrote a poetic event that confronts himself for the first time, limiting his desire for ascent extremely, as if he were breaking up with all the poetic roads that he wandered and restored his ‘hometown’ and wanted to go to ‘another hometown’. Yoon Dongju's poetic world is based on the imagination of seeking the relationship with his hometown in a multi-layered attitude, and it has gradually changed based on this. And the imagination was connected to the distinct future of the new era, which was waiting for 'shame' to be compulsively performed in poetry and reality based on faith.
