The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between sensation-seeking tendencies and short-form video addiction among college students, and to verify whether Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) functions as a moderating variable in this relationship. To this end, sensation-seeking tendencies were set as the independent variable, short-form video addiction as the dependent variable, and Fear of Missing Out (specific alienation and state alienation) as the moderating variable.
This study conducted an online self-report survey from March 10 to March 20, 2026. A total of 278 participants were included in the final analysis after excluding 8 incomplete responses, recruited through snowball sampling. Data were analyzed using SPSS and Hayes's (2022) PROCESS Macro Model 1, with 10,000 bootstrap iterations for significance testing.
The results of the analysis are as follows.
First, sensation-seeking tendencies had a statistically significant positive effect on short-form video addiction, supporting Research Hypothesis 1.
Second, Fear of Missing Out positively moderated the relationship between sensation-seeking tendencies and short-form video addiction, supporting Research Hypothesis 2-1.
Third, specific alienation fear moderated the relationship between sensation-seeking tendencies and short-form video addiction, supporting Research Hypothesis 2-2.
Fourth, state alienation fear did not show a statistically significant moderating effect on the relationship between sensation-seeking tendencies and short-form video addiction, leading to the rejection of Research Hypothesis 2-3.
The significance of this study is as follows.
First, this study holds academic significance in that it empirically verified the direct relationship between sensation-seeking tendencies and short-form video addiction, and identified the moderating mechanism of Fear of Missing Out.
Second, this study has practical significance in that it provides foundational data applicable in counseling and educational settings by presenting the psychological variable structure necessary for the early identification and intervention of college students vulnerable to short-form video addiction.
Third, by exploring the way Fear of Missing Out operates in the unique context of short-form video platforms — distinct from SNS — this study contributes to the development of digital media addiction prevention programs and related policies.
