Ⅰ. Background and aims
- Despite of high prevalence of functional dyspepsia, the cure rate is still low.
- More objective assessments for functional dyspepsia are needed.
- Although Banha-sasim-tang, the traditional Korean herbal formula, is known to cure dyspepsia, clinical evidences from randomized controlled trial are needed.
- In traditional Korean medicine, the correlation studies between functional dyspepsia, electrogastrography, digital tongue diagnosis and symptom differentiation questionnaire are needed.
Ⅱ. Methods
- Evaluation of efficacy of Banha-sasim-tang on functional dyspepsia (randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled, 2 center trial)
- Assessment of correlation between electrogastrography, digital tongue diagnosis and symptom differentiation questionnaire.
Ⅲ. Results
- Clinical trials
a. Significant improvement of early satiety symptom after administration of Banha-sasim-tang.
b. Significant decrease of postprandial tachygastria of pyrolus on electrogastrography after administration of Banha-sasim-tang.
c. Improvement of global dyspeptic symptoms and quality of life (not significant)
- Correlation
a. Electrogastrography showed the correlation with nausea, vomiting, flatulence, early satiety and abdominal cramp. However, it showed low sensitivity and negative predictive value.
b. There is not significant correlation between the values of digital tongue diagnosis and functional dyspepsia
c. There is significant positive correlation between symptom differentiation scores and the severity of dyspepsia.

Ⅳ. Applications

- Improvement on the quality of clinical trial conduction through strict monitoring
- Stimulation on the placebo development in clinical studies of traditional Korean medicine
- Objective assessement of functional dyspepsia symptoms through questionnaire, electrogastrography and etc.
