Sustainability is emerging as an increasingly significant topic in the textile design industry, which has a substantial impact on the global economy and environment. This study investigates previous research aimed at promoting sustainable growth in the textile design industry and focuses particularly on methods to analyze the connection between sustainability and various stages of the textile design process. With the recent surge in global interest in environmental protection, the textile design industry is paying greater attention to developing and manufacturing products in sustainable ways. To understand this background and explore how the textile design industry can enhance sustainability, a large volume of textual data was collected and analyzed using text mining to study the connection with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research methodology involved utilizing large-scale news big data to quantitatively identify major global issues in textile design, recognizing key areas and trends in sustainability, and categorizing these into environmental, social, and economic aspects to analyze and visualize their frequencies. Specifically, the study analyzed the connection between sustainability and SDGs in the textile design industry through data cleaning, document vectorization, calculating document similarity scores, and visualizing the results. Challenges in the textile design industry and various innovative case studies were examined to reassess the feasibility of achieving SDGs.
Additionally, the study explored how considering sustainable resources and production methods at each stage of the textile design process can contribute to SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) in the first stage. The second stage of research and analysis reviewed contributions to SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) through the selection of ethical and eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient production methods, and the introduction of innovative technologies. In the third stage of integration, the need to achieve SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), SDG 12, and SDG 13 using digital and innovative technologies was identified. In the fourth and fifth stages of selection and production, the study explored methods to support SDG 9, SDG 12, and SDG 13 by reviewing and evaluating the sustainability of designs, thus demonstrating the need for linking SDGs with the textile design industry and emphasizing the importance and feasibility of sustainable development within the textile design process.
In conclusion, this study proposes and reviews a new analytical method for analyzing SDGs in the textile design industry through text mining, confirming the connection with the textile design process. The text mining analysis of SDGs provides objective and quantitative data to support related discussions or decisions, playing a significant role not only in sustainable design within the textile design industry but also in establishing investment, research and development, and marketing strategies.
This study is expected to provide useful guidelines for policymakers, companies, and designers in the textile design industry and to lay the foundation for future research on sustainable textile design, contributing academically to the field.
