The purpose of this theris is to discuss the importance and the operations of the unseen factors in E. M. Forster's short stories in the light of his literary background, his artistic, aesthetic and fictional ideas. To do this, this thesis deals with some of his popular short stories as basic material for analysis. It seems to be inevitable and essential for Forster to use such unseen or mystical elements in his stories, in view of his literary intention which is to discover a transcendent reality concealed in the actual life by uniting and harmonizing such contrasting ideas as life and art, material and spiritual world, the actualities and the ideal, and etc. As for the relationship between the seen and the unseen, Forster seems to be devoted to seeing and inter-preting the one in terms of the other;i. e, to interpret the actual life in terms of the underlying spiritual reality. For him the spirituality assumes various forms such as classical deities, fairies, superstitions, folklore, and etc. Forster calls the stories dealing with these spiritua elements "fantasies". In his fantasies Forster attempts to show how the unseen factors intervene in the actual life of characters and how they operate and colour the thoughts and actions of tho characters. They reveal the vature of the circumstances and charaters concerned. In short, they influence and direct the event and men of his stories.
Thus it may be said that Foreter is justified in using the unseen factors in his short stories both for his characterization and plot development, and further for his artistic device of constructing a transcendent and harmonizing reality over the actualities, which is his due artistic purpose.
