This article is focused on presenting diary of Jesan( ) Kim Seongtak( , 1684~1747) and discussing its value as literary writing. Jesan wrote two diaries, Jibirok ( ) in his days of fully studying, and Gyeongshindongjiilsigi ( ) which he left moments of exile literatus.
Jibirok is a diary of 49-years-old mature scholar serving as local functionary. Jesan passed local examination and basic examination which drove attention from local community to central government. However, due to spread of smallpox he could not make large-scale social activities but only did his best to look after his family and relatives. Yet Jesan firmly maintained his attitude as a scholar by concentrating on reading, teaching and training nearby pupils, and he kept on retrospecting and self discipline. His diary shows calm and poetic inside of a scholar under continual anxiety and tragedy originated from the epidemic.
Jesan wrote his exile diary Gyeongshindongjiilsigi at Gwangyang. Front part is written in 1740, third year of his exile to Gwangyang, and it shows him getting used to the place. At this moment he don’t seem not very impoverished. In 1741 and 1742 there is no writings, as he was under mourning for his mother’s death. Jesan came back and started to write in January 1743, and his description about exile days are more detailed. Also more kids came to learn from him, and more relationship was built with their parents or local scholars. His only servant made a living for his lord in exile, by participating in community and helping one another. Senior scholar who is over 60 years old, gently walks toward quiet meditation of later years.
There must be more diaries of Jesan. That is why we should put our effort on reading and distinguishing leftover documents. However even with diaries currently discovered, diaries related to Jesan Kim Seongtak are important reference showing the daily life of local literatus and situation that exiled scholar faced. Moreover, diaries of local scholars who came to learn from exiled man is worth spotting as a record of correlation between culture of exile and local culture.
