As the 21st century is the period of one-person media, many middle school girls easily obtain makeup information unlike the past and follow it imprudently without correctly understanding and knowing exact ways of makeup. In this sense, the need to give correct awareness and education of make-up to them has been gradually increasing.
The purpose of this study is to examine makeup awareness and the need and preference for self-makeup education and develop a self-makeup program in middle school girls.
A total of 835 questionnaires were collected from 12 middle schools(300 girls from each) located in Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, and Gwangju(2 coeducational schools and 2 girls’ middle school from each) from August 1~30, 2015. The results of analysis were as follows.
First, regarding general characteristics in middle school girls, the effect of their inclination on makeup awareness was analyzed. Interest in makeup was high in those having a boyfriend in the present or past. For importance of appearance, more than half of them answered ‘important’. For the period of starting makeup, the highest percentage of the 1st graders answered ‘the 5-6th grade of elementary school’. The 3rd graders answered ‘middle school’ and the percentage of the answer was higher than other graders. Most of them started makeup because of their friends or sisters. The findings suggested that the present middle school girls started makeup in earlier age than the past girls.
Second, the effect of general characteristics on awareness of self-makeup education was analyzed in middle school girls. Most of them had high interest in makeup but had not received makeup education. Thus, high percentage of them showed their intention to participate in self-makeup education, indicating high interest and needs for the education.
Preferred methods to obtain knowledge and information of self-makeup was to receive practice-focused education for 1-2 hours by professionals or theory and practice in the ratio of 5:5 in school.
Third, the effect of makeup awareness on awareness of self-makeup education was analyzed. Those having high interest in makeup and usually applying makeup in general including lips, eyes, and a cheek had high intention to participate in a program which offers makeup demonstration and skin care information. Those starting makeup in earlier age and having high frequency of makeup preferred to obtain beauty knowledge from professionals. Preferred education was a more professional method such as theory and practice in the ratio of 5:5. Those having low interest in makeup preferred to get skin care information.
Fourth, based on the findings, this study suggested a correct program for self-makeup education.
The self-makeup program was developed to help understand a correct way and concept of makeup, find better self-image according to eyebrows and face types, and use learned information in daily life more easily with higher confidence through more natural base and color makeup.
Further research should be conducted to develop more satisfying self-makeup programs based on the program developed in this study and to supplement its insufficiency. This study will contribute to providing basic education data for correct makeup information, increasing appearance satisfaction, and improving quality of life for middle school girls.
