한국 고등학생의 해외 유학국 국가이미지 인식에 관한 탐색적 연구 = Exploratory Study of Country Image as Host Country for Studying Abroad - Cultural semiotic analysis of Korean students’ perception about 5 countries’ image-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 해외유학 현상 중 최근 우리나라에서 두드러지게 드러나는 우수한 고등학생들의 외국대학 진학이라는 조기유학 현상에 주목하면서 한국 고등학생들의 외국대학 선호이유가 구체적인 정보에 기반을 두기보다는 유학국의 추상적인 국가이미지의 반영과 더불어 한국이나 한국대학에 대한 부정적 이미지 때문은 아닐까하는 의문을 제기하였다. 이와 같은 맥락에서 본 연구는 한국 고등학생들이 인식하는 유학국의 국가이미지 차이를 반영할 수 있는 어휘들을 설문조사 방식으로 수집, 대표 어휘를 재구성함과 동시에 그 특성 항목을 개발하는 탐색적 연구를 시도하고자 하였다. 또한, 교육국 이미지의 핵심가치를 문화기호학적인 방법론을 통해 추출하여 유형화시키는 방식으로 고등학생들이 외국대학의 진학 과정에서 추구하는 가치가 무엇인지, 각 국가마다 어떻게 다른지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 또한, 본 연구는 미국, 중국, 일본, 호주 등 유학국으로 선호되는 각 국가에 대해서 추구되는 가치가 어떻게 다른지를 살펴보기 위하여 한국을 포함한 5개 교육국 국가이미지를 비교분석하는 탐색적 연구를 통해 유학국으로서의 국가이미지에 대한 실증적인 후속연구에 키워드를 제공하는 역할을 수행할 수 있기를 기대했다. 연구 분석 결과, 유학국 즉, 교육국으로서의 국가이미지를 구성하는 항목 어휘는 대체로 사회적 분위기와 발전성, 그리고 자연환경과 국민성 같은 4가지 주요 구성요인에 기반을 둔다는 결론을 도출할 수 있었다. 특히, 이 연구를 통해 두드러지게 나타난 교육국으로써의 주요 특성항목은 발전성과 관련된 부분이었다. 또한, 본 연구는 복수 응답자에 의해서 선택을 받은 국가이미지 연상 어휘들을 문화기호학적으로 재구성하고 그 특성항목을 4가지 형태로 유형화할 수 있었는데, 이를 통해 5개국 각각에 필요한 교육제도 개선방안과 해외 홍보방안을 제안할 수 있었다. 실제로 본 연구는 유학국 이미지 연구라는 아직 체계화되지 못한 연구 영역의 확대와 심화의 척도를 제공할 수 있었다는 점에서 그 연구의 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Korean high school students have been one of the most active participants in international mobility. This study supposed that students’ different perception about the image of a host country study can lead to their destination choice. This research on which components values influence student consumers’ image of a host country is a starting point that will allow international universities to develop successful recruitment and global communication strategies. The study conducted using an explanatory research design which significant components values of students’ image for a particular host country choice among five countries supposing that students are planning to go study abroad. The purpose of this study is to understand the dynamics of Korean students’ international mobility to study abroad by using the consumption value concept of cultural semiotics. Korean students gave expression to their distinctive perceptions for each of five countries as an educational country. In the comparison of images, the remarks regarding the images of U.S. were more social oriented images and utopic values, China and Australia was less socially perceived but environmental images and convenient values. Korean students were relatively strongly looking for that China has strong vision and potential comparing with others countries. These perception statements were also related to effect after graduation. They had an perception which Japan has a particularly unique national traits and relational values. Choosers who preferred Korea didn’t heavily rely on positive social and practical values. In the results, this study found that countries governments and universities should be looking for ways to promote their unique identity and character through educational systems improvement and active PR strategies. Therefore, we argue that these exploratory analyses can be expected to have two primary implications: the conceptualization of follow-up studies and the creation of PR strategies for the Korean universities and overseas universities.
