In the absence of the exact examination of the perception of South Koreas youth regarding the youth of North Korea and the analysis on the heterogeneity of impression of South Korean youth on North Korean youth, it is very hard to establish the interchange plan between South Korean and North Korean youths, develop a concrete program for youths to enable them to adapt to a new society after national reunification, and formulate related policies for the Korean youth. Based on this assumption, this study aimed to provide the basic data for social integration after the reunification by studying the way of thinking of both South Korean and North Korean youths and the heterogeneity between them. A total of 688 students from middle school, high school, and college, called the N-generation, were participated in this study as subjects. Results showed a significant difference between the way of thinking of South Korean and North Korean youths as perceived by the South Korean youth. Likewise, there was considerable difference of views among South Korean youth regarding North Korean youth depending on sex, academic level, and region. In particular, female students regarded North Korean youth more negatively compared with male students. In terms of academic level, high school and college students perceived North Korean youth more negatively compared with middle school students. Similarly, the youth living in small and medium-sized cities claimed to feel differently (both positive and negative aspects) about North Korean youth compared with the youth living in rural areas or large cities. These results indicate the need for a differentiated educational and social program for the social and cultural integration and exchange plans between South Korean and North Korean youths based on sex, academic level, and region. Likewise, the heterogeneity between the youths in North and South Korean youth should be resolved, since they will play the leading role in national reunification and consequent social integration. This study is expected to ultimately contribute to the establishment of a more practical and concrete plan to solve the heterogeneity between North Korean and South Korean youths.
