The purpose of the thesis is to study the text elements that form the verisimilitude based on pretence theory in the 1920-30's Korean realism short-story. And then, the thesis considers the general meanings of the novels throughout the verisimilitude.
On the premise that reality of the fictional world are effects evoked by the constituents of the fictional world, the thesis looks into the reality effect and truth effect in relation to pretence theory. Specifically, the reality effect is achieved by organization of text elements, which lead readers in the pretence toward the fictional world effectively and then sustain reader's pretence toward the fictional world. The truth effect, on the other hand, is accomplished by the constitution of text elements, which evoked the reader's mental effects by the fictional world.
The chapter II dealt with the text elements that lead readers to the pretence toward the fictional world and sustain reader's pretence toward the fictional world in order to examine the reality effect of the novels. To make it clear, it could be divided into two parts. The chapter II is the level of what leads readers to the pretence toward the fictional world and it dealt with the actuality and the likeness of the novels. The Chapter Ⅲ is the level of what sustains reader's pretence toward the fictional world continuously. In other words, it dealt with the factuality and lifelikeness of the novels.
The chapter Ⅳ treated of these aspects, which are the text elements that change readers' pretence toward the fictional world, and that sustain reader's changed pretence toward the fictional world in order to examine the truth effect of the novels. The text elements that confuse readers' pretence toward the fictional world are shown at the different background. In case of One lucky day, it maximizes a confusion of understanding of readers by Changing of the importance of the primary case. It makes tragic Irony. The tragic mind of readers is achieved by readers' assimilating with characters that are deprived from reality. In the season for the memil flower of Lee Hyo-Suk's, the fictional world differents from the real world gives patterns of the Universe, and then, this induces readers' assimilating who try to find the patter in the fictional world. Furthermore, the reader's assimilating is sustained by the process of story. In case of Chisook of Chae Man-sik's, it maximizes a confusion of the pretence toward the fictional world by destroying the assimilating. Destroying the assimilating is induced by the narrator, who didn't know that he had wrong idea. Therefore, the first pretence of reader's toward the fictional world of Chisook is transformed into the second pretence of reader's toward the fictional world. And the transformed pretence toward the fictional world of Chisook sustained and enlarged in process of story.
These mentioned above are about the reality effect and truth effect in 1920-30's Korean realism short-stories. Also, these tell that the reality effect is the means of direct communication between the real world and the fictional world, and that the truth effect is the means of indirect communication on the assumption that the reality effect and the truth effect are a way to relate to the real world and the fictional world.
In shorts, the thesis that has started from the concept that verisimilitude can be divided into two parts, the fictional real and the narrative truth, expects the discussion about the actuality, the factuality and the totality to enlarge those. Setting up the two effects as pillars, we should establish details that can help understanding about various aspects of verisimilitude.
