      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Buddhist music is believed to be appeared in Silla Dynasty in the 8th to 9th century based on records in Samguk Yusa and the scripts in the Stupa of Jingam Seonsa. However, the music might has existed prior to the 4th century when the Buddhism was approved as the state religions in the Three Kingdoms. The history of the beginning of the Buddhist music in the 8th century is the result of the narrow viewpoint to focus the beompae, meaning “Sanscrit songs.” However, the Buddhist music encompasses other genre of music performed in the Buddhist rituals and ceremonies. In this paper, I will explore various records regarding the Buddhist music in wider meaning in Samguk yusa in order to reconstruct the history of Buddhist music during the Silla Dynasty.
There are various kinds of Buddhist music recorded in Samguk yusa. The yeombul (Buddhist sutra) is the most often referred music in Samguk yusa. It is used to praise the Buddha’s achievements and is performed in various rituals. Other type of song is ge (Buddhist chant) written in Chinese characters. Still other type of song is geosa sori (folksong-style song) to promote the Buddhism to the common people. Rather, the word beompae is not found in Samguk yusa.
It is sure that the Chinese Tang dynasty style Buddhist music had not been exist when Jingam seonsa brought it in the 9th century. Rather, the various kinds of sutra, chants, and folksong-style songs were popular among the people in the Silla dynasty. We should encompass the wider meaning of the Buddhist music in order to enlighten the history of the Buddhist music in the Silla Dynasty. The music should be existed before the Buddhism was recognized as the state religions in the Three Kingdoms. According to Samguk yusa, it was not beompae but yeombul, ge, and geosa sori performed in the prior to the introduction of Tang-style music in the Silla Dynasty.
