This study investigates spatial determinants of pedestrian traffic accidents involving older adults using credit card transaction data, with the objective of informing the expansion of senior protection zones in South Korea. The analysis encompasses administrative districts across 31 municipalities in Gyeonggi Province, drawing on accident records from 2019 to 2023. Poisson and negative binomial regression models were employed to compare model fit and identify significant predictors of accident incidence. Findings reveal that accident rates are markedly higher in old downtowns, residential neighborhoods, and commercial areas. Locations with dense clusters of older adult–oriented facilities—such as traditional markets, hospitals, pharmacies, and grocery stores—exhibit elevated accident risks. These results indicate a spatial mismatch between the actual distribution of older adults’ walking activities and the placement of designated protection zones, underscoring the need to refine designation criteria. The study offers empirical evidence to guide targeted safety interventions and to strengthen policy frameworks for protecting older pedestrians.
