찬송가 <주님께 영광>의 수용과 콘트라팍툼에 대한 고찰 = The Church Hymn Thine be the Glory and Study on the Use of Contrafactum

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A melody by Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759), the famous German composer, is sung as a congregational hymn in church. His music is included in the current German Protestant hymnal Evangelisches Gesangbuch (1993) as no. 13, which is set to the lyrics Tochter Zion, freue dich by Friedrich Heinrich Ranke (1798-1876). In the current Korean Protestant hymnal (2006), Handel’s music is included with the lyrics Thine be the glory by Edmond Louis Budry (1854-1932). It is interesting that Handel’s music is sung in Germany during the Advent season, while Korean Christians sing it on Easter. Contrafactum is the technique of making music, in which one combines existent melodies with different lyrics.
In the early 20th century, Contrafactum was a method widely used in Korea. All music known in the lives of Korean Christians has become the subject of Contrafactum. A variety of music was used, including Korean traditional music, Western hymns, foreign folk songs, and Changga. Since the late 20th century, Korean Christians have found the precious value of Korean traditional music and have paid attention to creating church hymns in the style of Korean traditional music. In addition, a few Contrafactum examples using popular songs can be found today. If one considers the neutrality of music, different types of music can be a source of church hymns. It would be of great value for Korean church leaders and church musicians to think of how to accommodate our culture and music, rather than to judge about their secularity of music.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

독일 작곡가인 헨델(Georg Friedrich Händel, 1685-1759)의 오라토리오는 헨델시대뿐 아니라 지금까지 사랑을 받고 있다. 그의 음악은 널리 퍼졌고 찬송가에도 그 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다. 흥미로운 점은, 헨델의 음악이 서로 다른가사로 독일과 한국에서 불린다는 점이다. 독일 개신교 찬송가에 헨델의 음악은 프리드리히 하인리히 랑케(Friedrich Heinrich Ranke, 1798-1876)가 작사한 <딸 시온이여, 기뻐하라>(Tochter Zion, freue dich)라는 가사와 결합되어있고, 한국 개신교 찬송가에는 에드먼드 루이스 버드리(Edmond Louis Budry, 1854-1932)가 작사한 <주님께 영광>과 결합되어 있다. 또한, 독일에서 헨델의 멜로디는 대림절에 불리는가 하면, 한국에서는 부활절 찬송으로 애창되고 있다. 같은 곡조에 내용만 바꾸어 부르는 기법을 콘트라팍툼이라고 힌다.
콘트라팍툼은 음악가/작곡가가 아닌 어느 누구나 쉽게 만들어 부를 수 있는 방식으로서, 찬송가 역사에서 콘트라팍툼으로 만들어진 많은 찬송가를 찾아볼 수 있다. 본 논문에서 독일 찬송가인 <딸 시온이여, 기뻐하라>와 한국 찬송가인 <주님께 영광>에 사용된 곡조의 출처와 작사자 및 내용을 살펴봄과 함께 교회음악에서 사용되는 콘트라팍툼에 대해 고찰하고자 한다.
