슬라브인 마케도니아인의 정체성 논란 : 주변국가와의 갈등을 중심으로 = The Dispute on the Identity of Slavic-Macedonian: with the Conflict between Slavic-Macedonian and its Neighbor Nations

The Balkans, with Macedonia at their centre, are one of the most ethnically, linguistically and religiously complex areas of the world. The macedonian question has been the core of Balkan politics since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Since the end of the nineteenth century, Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece have all put forward competing claims to geographic Macedonia in whole or in part. Each of these states legitimised their politicies by arguing that territorial, ethnic, lingustic, religious and cultural boundaries of Macedonia congruent with their respective national-states. The Slav-Macedonian identity has been constructed in a brief period of time with a very fragile ethnic foundation. The lack of a defined Slav-Macedonian identity has repeatedly served as grounds of political discord. In this environment this article examines the conflict between Slav-Macedona and its neighbor nations since its independence in 1992. The very young Macedonian national identity may exist. As the Macedonian state itself, it seems very fragile. The ghost of the Macedonain question is still hunting the Balkan.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

발칸지역에서 정치적 목적으로 가장 단시간에 인위적으로 형성된 대표적인 민족이 ‘슬라브-마케도니아인 (Slav-Macedonian)’ 이다. 1991년 독립한 마케도니아 공화국은 일반적으로 슬라브-마케도니아 민족의 국가로 알려져 있다. 그러나 1912년 이전까지 마케도니아 지역에는 어떤 형태의 독립 국가나 민족도 존재하지 않았으며, 슬라브-마케도니아인이라는 민족 명칭이 등장하는 기록도 없다. 오스만 터키의 발칸지배가 종결되며 마케도니아지역은 세르비아, 불가리아, 그리스 영토로 나뉘어 편입되었고, 1945년 구(舊)유고연방의 형성과 함께 슬라브-마케도니아인은 하나의 민족으로 인정되며 이들을 위한 공화국도, 표준어도 만들어 진다. 구유고연방의 해체시기인 1991년 마케도니아도 독립을 선언하고 새로운 공화국을 슬라브-마케도니아인의 국가로 공포한다. 그러나 마케도니아의 독립은 발칸지역에서 19세기 임시방편적으로 마무리 지었던 ‘마케도니아 문제(macedonian question)'를 다시 불러일으킨다.
취약한 인종적 기반(ethnic foundation)으로 민족과 국가의 정통성을 지켜나갈 모든 기준과 상징에 대해 슬라브-마케도니아인은 갈등하고 쟁취해야 한다. 이 연구는 슬라브-마케도니아 민족의 성립과 취약한 민족 정체성 문제를 ‘마케도니아 문제’와 함께 정리해 보았다. 연구의 두 번째 부분에서는 1991년 마케도니아의 독립과 함께 시작되는 마케도니아와 알바니아, 불가리아, 그리스와의 갈등을 핵심적인 사항들을 중심으로 분석해 보았다.
