This study aims to demonstrate that re-framing functions as a crucial strategy for manifesting authorship in the post-photography era. With the advancement and democratization of digital technology, photographic images have evolved beyond their traditional role as mere tools of documentation and representation. They have now established themselves as a central medium for generating meaning and shaping discourse in contemporary society. This shift has fundamentally restructured the ontological status and aesthetic possibilities of traditional photography, challenging conventional ideas such as realism and objectivity that have long been associated with the medium. In this context, the study focuses on the concept of re-framing, which refers to the act of resetting the frame boundaries of an image after its capture. Positioned as a continuation of traditional framing practices, re-framing is carried out through artistic strategies such as cropping and expanding, serving as a critical artistic tool for conveying the author’s creative intention and perspective in the post-photography era. To verify this, the study analyzes the works of Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff, examining how each artist employs re-framing to assert authorship in their respective practices. Andreas Gursky visualizes the capitalist systems and structural characteristics of contemporary society through digital compositing and large-scale formats. By utilizing digital technologies, he offers viewers new visual experiences that challenge conventional perceptions. Meanwhile, Thomas Ruff engages in extreme enlargement and cropping of existing images found online, emphasizing the degraded materiality and pixelated surfaces of digital images. His work invites critical reflection on the production and circulation of images within the digital environment. Both artists utilize re-framing strategies to assert their authorship, transforming the photographic medium into a critical vehicle for discourse in contemporary visual culture. Through these case analyses, this study confirms that re-framing is not merely a technical process but a significant creative act that involves redefining the boundaries of the frame in the post-capture phase. It recognizes the frame as a fluid and dynamic space, challenging the notion of fixed boundaries. Furthermore, the study underscores how re-framing contributes to redefining the aesthetic potential of photography and reshaping the concept of authorship in the post-photography era.
