「A glimpse at Marx and Historical Materialism(唯物史觀)」, authored by Jeong Tae Shin in August 1920, was the first openly published article regarding Historical Materialism, ever to be produced in colonized Korea. This article was a collection of excerpts from Sakai Toshihiko`s 「An Outline of Historical Materialism(唯物史觀槪要)」, excerpts that he considered to be particularly important, and of which the contents that he most agreed with. So the article shows us well how Jeong Tae Shin was perceiving Historical Materialism. The article itself is sort of a symbol of the study and propagation of Marxism which was conducted by the members of the Marxist Groupe (minor units), which was organized in May the same year. Jeong Tae Shin considered `Dialectical materialism`(dialectics and materialism combined) to be the characteristic of Marxism, and he acknowledged the Historical Materialism being applied to the interpretation of world history as the very basis for Marxism. Like all other Korean socialists under colonial rule, Jeong Tae Shin embraced Marxism via the Historical Materialism. And their such efforts had very much to do with their other efforts of the sublation of Capitalism, and acting upon the cause of `Socialism is the only route to go`. To Jeong Tae Shin, who embraced Marxism, Capitalism was a target of sublation. And in the current fight(`class struggles`) with Capitalism, he thought that labor problems were destined to come up, and he believed that such problems involved not only the laborers but also the human race. He also argued that labor movements were the only way to resolve all the labor problems, and sublate Capitalism as well. At the time, one of the most popular terms was `reconstruction`, and Marxists as well used that word from time to time, as an ordinary word. But Marxists like Jeong Tae Shin who pursued the complete wipe out of Capitalist traits, took words like `class`, `labor` and `revolution`, which described the problems of the time in the most glaring fashion, and made them of their own, and acted upon their own cause. Their objective was not to simply `reconstruct` the world. They wished to change the world, to make it a new one.
