Intake port shape optimization for a intake 3-valve gasoline engine has been performed for the 'development of high efficiency engine. Intake 3-valve cylinder heads with various valve diameters and port heights were manufactured, and steady state flow experiments have been performed with these cylinder heads. The Intake 3-valve engines have better flow characteristics than the conventional intake 2-valve engines because the effective opening area of the intake 3-valve engine is larger than that of intake 2-valve engine. The effects of intake port design parameters on the intake flow rate and tumble were studied, and the design guidelines for the intake 3-valve engine were established.
