This study investigates the effect of two notetaking formats, i.e., a conventional blank format and an outline format, on L2 learners’ notetaking process and strategy use in lecture listening. For this purpose, this study employes qualitative approaches, analyzing videotaped learners’ notetaking procedures and their retrospective verbal reports regarding their notetaking process and strategy use. The findings suggest that the outline format might disturb some low level L2 learners’ listening and notetaking process, and therefore, caution should be exercised in arguing for the effectiveness of the outlined format on L2 learners’, especially low level learners’ lecture listening.
