Recent years have witnessed the production and utilization of geo-spatial information across many different fields. It's the general trend to create geo-spatial information by using such advanced technologies as aerial LiDAR and aerial digital cameras.
However, it takes much time and money to build up geo-spatial information for metropolitan areas or islands using a plane. Especially it's impossible to approach a border area or military zone with a plane, which makes it very demanding to build up geo-spatial information for those areas.
In order to solve the problem, they have conducted constant researches on building up geo-spatial information by using satellite imagery. Lately there appeared commercial satellite images of 1m GSD(ground sample distance) or higher. They provide the visibility and location accuracy similar to aerial photos and allow for the generation of geo-spatial information. However, the current utilization of high resolution satellite imagery has been limited to the generation and utilization of two-dimensional geo-spatial information of the territory based on mono images. It's required to generate geo-spatial information and secure its accuracy based on high resolution stereo satellite images of GSD 1m or higher.
This study set out to explore the possibility of generating geo-spatial information by using high resolution stereo satellite images of 1m or higher. By using three dimensional images such as IKONOS and GeoEye and further RPC and GCP, the investigator made geometric revisions to satellite images and analyzed the making and accuracy of DEM and ortho images.
By comparing the satellite images of GSD 0.5m by GeoEye recently launched with the old satellite images of 1m, I analyzed the accuracy of geo-spatial information using the same images and explored the potential for future uses.
I conduced sensor modeling to the high resolution satellite images with RPC of each satellite and GCP of numeric maps. As a result, the orientation accuracy recorded ±1.5m.
DEM results from three dimensional images indicate that accuracy was high on level grounds and low in mountains and cities, which calls for supplementary researches.
Using those data, I made ortho images and found out the geo-spatial information of 1/5,000 is a sure possibility when using high resolution satellite images of 1m. And I was able to secure certain accuracy only by using RPC for the inaccessible areas.
Those results show that one can build up geo-spatial information of certain accuracy without information about datum points by incorporating sensor modeling results into the satellite orbit information or space triangulation.
