We have synthesized MgO nanorods on Ag-coated substrates through the thermal evaporation
of MgB2 powders. The growth temperature affected the sample morphology, with one-dimensional
(1D) structures rather than film-like structures being favored at lower temperatures. The average
diameter of the 1D structures grown at 800 C was smaller than that of the structures grown at
900 C. The obtained MgO nanorods were single-crystal cubic structures. We have proposed a
possible growth mechanism of the MgO nanorods. The PL measurement with a Gaussian fitting
exhibited visible light emission bands centered at 430 nm and 528 nm.
